At The Regal we are on a journey to reduce our waste and minimise our impact on the environment. We have been looking at our carbon footprint and have identified key areas that we can improve on; here are some of the initiatives we have undertaken. If you have any further ideas or proposals about how we can improve our sustainability please contact bryony@regalcinemamelton.com.

Waste

Waste

We have assessed our waste production and we are cutting down on what we send to landfill by limiting any unnecessary purchases and diverting any remaining waste away from landfill.

  • Contacted distribution companies to reduce the amount of posters and other forms of advertising that we are sent.
  • Reorganised our waste system to collect used confectionary packaging. This is sent to Terracycle to be recycled into new products.
  • Implemented a return system for all toner cartridges to HP to be reused.
  • Swapped many products from PET bottles to glass, as glass as a material is infinitely recyclable, and from PLA to PET as we do not have the resources to dispose of PLA in a responsible way.
  • Recycling of used batteries.
  • We are in the process of introducing a food waste collection so leftover popcorn, cake and coffee can be diverted from landfill and sent to an anaerobic digestion plant.

Procurement

Procurement

We choose suppliers based on location and we love to support local.

  • We buy our milk from Vine Farm Dairy in Great Dalby – this means the journey from cow to coffee is only 4.5 miles!
  • We source our coffee from Wakelin’s Coffee, who buy ethically and support independent growers. We are currently working with them to minimise our packaging waste.
  • A selection of our drinks are made locally; Melton Red beer and our Belvoir Presses are both supplied from Belvoir Brewery. Sloeberry Spirits are delicious spirits made right here in Melton Mowbray. The award winning Round Corner Brewery supply us with beer which is brewed and bottled less than one mile away.
  • Our cakes are baked by a local supplier, Little Miss Cake Co. and delivered in reusable boxes.
  • Ice cream is sourced from Ferneley’s (and it’s delicious!).

We are currently reviewing products supplied by larger chains and are working on making swaps to more environmentally friendly packaging and better waste management in those areas.

Building A Green Screen

Building A Green Screen

When we refurbished the cinema we reused as much of the original cinema as possible, this included the seat stanchions and our gorgeous ticket machine. Other fixtures, such as our shell wall lights, were bought second hand to recreate the original environment and support reuse. As we started the cinema we purposefully put several practices in place with the environment in mind:

  • Installed LED lights throughout the building to cut down on bulb waste and electricity use.
  • None of our drinks are served in single use cups – our coffee mugs are especially popular!
  • Our hand towels in the toilet are washable and reusable hand towels, when considering all options this seemed the most sustainable with the least waste.

Raising Awareness

Raising Awareness

As we aim for net-zero carbon emissions, we must all help each other to reduce our carbon footprint. We hope you can join us in our efforts to be more sustainable.

Customer travel has the largest impact on our carbon footprint. To limit this we encourage our customers and staff to travel to and from The Regal sustainably. We have updated our website to include bike rack locations and public transport information. You can find that here (link to transport page).

We have also started an on screen campaign to educate our customers about our sustainability efforts and ask them to help us with our recycling system.

Moving Forward

Moving Forward

We have already taken many steps in our journey towards a more sustainable cinema.

  • We have updated our procurement process and our waste management.
  • We have undertaken management training and we will now incorporate this into our regular staff training to ensure all employees are aware of our commitment to sustainability.
  • We are committed to using our position to raise awareness and create a positive change in our community.

We know we are at the start of our journey but we are committed to continually improving our sustainable practices and we hope you will follow our progress and join us in creating a greener cinema.
